The new format for the Cornwall Open series met with a degree of approval at the warm up meeting; now there are just a few teething troubles with the points score system, but that is being sorted out.
A new club, Callington Road Runners registered with the Association this month. No points for guess where they are based.
2012 AND COUNTY SQUADS. The Award for All money that was supporting the 2012 initiative, and which the County Squad came off the back of, has now expired. I believe that the concept was alright but the delivery could be improved, otherwise we would have had a higher percentage of attendance. With this in mind I am attaching a questionnaire that I would appreciate you printing off and getting your athletes to look at, as well as yourselves, returning it to any of the names mentioned at the bottom. If we want to go forward it has to be with an input from as many people concerned as possible. Can I thank you now for taking the trouble to do it.
MOVING FORWARD is just what the South West Region is doing, which is why it would benefit the sport if as many coaches, officials etc as possible, could attend the forum at Exeter Golf Club on 6th May, starting at noon. I shall be leaving Chiverton Cross just before 10am if anybody wants a lift. The details have been sent out already, but I can send more if need be. Two of the sessions will involve breaking up into groups with a common interest to put forward idea for the future format in the region. These range from road running to officiating, and coaching to cross-country
COUNTY SCHOOLS MULTI EVENTS & RACE WALKING will be held at Par on Thursday 25th May. If you have any athletes that might like to try race walking why not try them out during a normal training run, just try for about 6 minutes or so of speed walking. If you are out on the roads, pop it in somewhere after half way, then continue running again. Remember, it is going to be in the South West league this year.
CARDIAC TESTING. The research unit at Treliske are conducting these tests and need 20 fit athletes between ages 16 and 40, to compare with 20 lounge lizards. The result will include a health pack after doing blood and treadmill testing, ultra sound scanning etc. I have a dozen names so far and would like to complete the numbers soon. The tests will be done between now and August, at the athletes convenience.
INHALER USERS It is a AKA requirement that clubs keep a record of all inhaler users. I shall attach the appropriate form, just in case this applies to any of your athletes.
CARN BREA The repair and makeover of the track at Carn Brea should be completed and operational by 8th May. We shall see.
THE KNOWLEDGE Following the incidences at the Commonwealth Games over running out of a lane, the 4x400 takeover fiasco, high jump refusals etc, we as coaches should make a point of teaching the athletes, even at the risk of repeating yourselves. Did you know, for example, that the 400m track is not actually 400m around, but more like 399.75m? This is because a track with a curb is measured 200mm/8” from the curb, and one without is measured 100mm/4” from the line.
Each lane is 1.2m wide and the lane staggers is approx 7.5m at the 400 start and 3.75m at 200m
The 4x100 acceleration zone is 10m long, the changeover box is 10m either side of the central line.
LEVEL 1 The last level 1 course under the old scheme will take place in July in Hayle, after which it will become a 2 day course, and I would imagine, more expensive. If you know anybody who is interested please ask them to contact Mo Pearson at Cornwall Sports Partnership
