CORNWALL COUNTY AA COACHING

JANUARY 2005 NEWSLETTER

OSGOOD SCHLATER. This problem to the lower leg below the knee was mentioned in last month’s newsletter. In case there was any misunderstanding, I DID say that bounding was a preventative exercise, and NOT  a cure. Jumping up and down on a fracture would be rather stupid.

TARGET 2012 This project continues, with some backing from an Award for All grant that is being used to subsidize athletes strength training sessions at gymnasiums, finance the hire of training venues and pay for coaches. In January, February and March we have sessions for sprints, throws, jumps and middle distance, although the latter are thinner on the ground due to cross country fixtures

COUNTY TRAINING FOR SPRINTS AND POWER EVENTS While we have been concentrating on the 2012 squad for a while, others are not being ignored, but fixing a day can be a problem as some athletes prefer Saturday to Sunday and Par have soccer matches on Saturdays’ so the following have been agreed, OPEN TO ANY ATHLETES; AND COACHES ARE VERY WELCOME TO COME ALONG AND HELP. BUT PLEASE, LET ME KNOW WHICH EVENT YOU AND YOUR ATHLETES ARE INTERESTED IN.

Saturday 22nd January 10.30-1230 Carn Brea Training for all sprints and power orientated events.

Saturday 5th February 2-4pm Carn Brea Race walking

Sunday 27th February 10.30-12.30 Par Sprints, and power events

Saturday 5th March 1030-12.30 Par Race walking

Saturday 19th March High Jump for experienced athletes at St Austell Table Tennis Centre. By experienced I mean, not for beginners. This will not be a workshop for training from scratch.

RACE WALKING note that we are continuing to promote training in this discipline as there is an interest to include it in some SW competitions. PLEASE suggest that some of your athletes try it

MALCOLM ARNOLD, coach to Jason Gardener and Colin Jackson, amongst many others, has agreed to come to Cornwall to run one or two workshops. Watch this space for further information.

COACH LICENCE RENEWALS These are due to start in April, so it is time to give some thought to getting in your credit points

SPORTS DEVELOPMENT  Athletics was represented on 10th January by Jacky, Tony and Viv at a County workshop for sports coaching development, organised by Sports Coach UK. Lots of proposals were looked at, a great deal of which centred around the involvement of local district councils working hand in hand with sports clubs. Nothing instantly applicable or any dramatic changes were implemented, but it was worth having an input into what may be coming in the future.

STRENGTH It is not too late to begin strength training with your athletes, which can be carried on into late April at least.

AGM of the CCAA will be held at the same Summercourt venue as the 2004 coaching forum on 21st February. This is the chance to help promote the regeneration of the county.
