CORNWALL COUNTY AA COACHING
JULY 2004 NEWSLETTER
As soon as anybody mentions strength training most
people think ‘weights,’ or becoming ‘big and muscle bound.’ This is not the
case. Paula Radcliffe uses weights and is hardly muscle bound, so does sprinter
Kim Collins. Strength
training can mean anything from own bodyweight exercises to
Medicine
balls, to resistance bands, hill running, tyre pulling and of course, working
out in a gym. I would like to introduce coaches to all of these topics through
a workshop to allay any fears and give you the chance to try some of the
exercises and mediums involved and look at which exercises are more useful to
specific events. Yes, it will include some weights and machines, but if I can
point out that at THE GYM in Truro, where I work, we have many clients, young
and old, men and women, all using weights as a medium towards fitness, which
can be designed to enhance any athletic discipline. The actual date will be
announced ASAP, but at the moment I am trying to get it recognised for credits towards
your coaching certificate.

Add this to the podiatrist, Stephen Bloor at Mullion (tel. 01326 240078) and Mike Erith in the east of the county, and we are beginning to sprout a good service for athletic injuries. Don’t forget, I have two complimentary vouchers for a diagnosis with Stephen Bloor. Don’t forget, Sports psychology on line is available on www.sportaces.co.uk and is reputed to be very good.
LSC FUNDING. There has been a fundamental change (sic) in that all participating athletes will be required to work towards the CGLI Key Skills 1 Certificate. This means they have to maintain a portfolio (12 pages) with 3 goals before Christmas and 3 after. These portfolios include assessment sheets to be completed by the coach on a monthly basis. The coach is required to attend a 1 day assessment course at either Camborne or St. Austell.
Each athlete has to attend 80 hours of coaching per year for which he/she will earn £100 for his or her club. A minimum of 12 athletes is required to form a ‘class.’
These are in addition to keeping a scheme of work and register, as in the past. Anybody wishing to undertake this mammoth task should let me know the numbers involved by 25th July. Failing this, we can wait until the records at the College reflect a very low uptake of the scheme.
WINTER EVENT SPECIFIC COURSES
These have been planned and will be announced shortly once all the details are finalized, but are likely to include two for hurdles, two for throws, two for sprints and at least one for endurance.
Since the downgrading of the AAA’s standards I have reissued this sheet with the one attached. Please tear up your old copy
