MAY 2004 NEWSLETTER

LSC FUNDING FOR COACHING Over the past two years this scheme has paid out nearly £9000 to participating clubs for athletic coaching, but we will not know until later in July if it is to continue for a further year

COLLEGE GYMNASIUMS These are available for use at Camborne and Saltash for the amazingly low cost of 50p for students and £1.50 for non students. At these prices it is well worth looking at them for future inclusion into training programmes. If you are unfamiliar with weight training or would like some guidance of how and what, to include in any specific event training programme, please give me a call.

SUMMER BEACH TRAINING DAY 17TH JULY GWITHIAN TOWANS. 10am – 12 noon This will be an all events day organised by Cornwall Active Sports, athletes being divided into groups for speed events, throwing, long distance, middle distance, and jumps. Cost £2 meet 10am in the first car park on the right when entering the Towans.

STEPHEN C BLOOR  Musculo-skelital podiatrist. TARGET 2012 Aiming at giving the best opportunities possible to get athletes to the 2012 Olympic Games by achieving a Grade 1 or 2 standard. The plan is laid out separately, and according to last years county rankings there would have been 41 athletes with the necessary requirement. We all know that there will be drop outs and that Grade 2 will not be sufficient for international competition. However, it is a start upon which we can build and advance. Cornwall has produced international athletes in the past and currently has 3 or 4 that are active. I would just like to see a few more. The guide lines and standards will be sent to you in the next few days

LEVEL 1 This is a possibility within the county before the end of the year providing we get sufficient interest. Let Jacky Brett or myself know of any interest

LEVEL 3 Days 3 & 4 at Cardiff University 18/19th September £80

Event specific for all events is panned for11/12th December at Whitchurch, Bristol. If you are interested apply asap because if they cannot get a dozen applicants the course will be moved up to Bristol  APPLY TO Liz Patrick at  THE NEW UKA ADDRESS  Athletics House, Central Boulevard, Blythe Valley Park, Solihull, West Midlands B90 8AJ New Tel # 0870 9986800

CHILD PROTECTION AND GENERAL PRACTICE. I know it’s a bit of a chore, but if you are involved with coaching children it is wise, for your own safely, to do this course. The next one is planned for 18th May at Newquay Tretheris school  THERE IS THE ADDED BENEFIT THAT COACHES WITH THIS QUALIFICATION, ALONG WITH EQUITY, INCREASE THE NUMBER OF POINTS FOR THEIR ‘CLUB MARK’ WHICH ULTIMATELY RAISES THE LEVEL OF GRANT AID POSSIBLE

RACE WALKING  I would like to see this event reinvented in the county and would suggest trying some athletes out, especially young one’s. It only needs to be one or two laps as a taster, and indeed that is just what I shall be doing with my Active Sports taster sessions for years 5 and 6. Afterall, there are now some coaches in the county with a Leader Award in Walking.

SPRINT HURDLES COACHING DAY.  Led by Neil  Tunstall. Coach to international athlete, Steven Green

10.00-1300 Par June 5th (TO BE CONFIRMED IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS) and supported by the County AA  Cost £1.50  Book now to avoid disappointment. Keep alert for an update
