COACHES ARE INVITED TO ATTEND

RACE WALKING. A 1000m walk was held at the SW League meeting in Yeovil and two more are planned. this year. It should be noticed that the English Schools Athletic Association and the Race Walking Association held a teaching award day at Sheffield earlier this month. Could they be thinking of introducing it into their track and field programme, I wonder. Perhaps we are on the right track to promote the event now. Help with walking can be obtained from Bev Pearce on 01637 859399.

WEST OF ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

Never heard of them? No, neither had I until I read a notice in AW, but they are being held at Yate, up near Bristol on Sunday 15th May when we shall all be at Par for the County champs. Contact Graham Howell on 01454 261458

SPRINTS AND HURDLES COMPETITION

Taking a lead from the BMC races for middle distance, SPAR are sponsoring this competition, which again is at Yate on Sunday, 12th June. Yes, the day after the County Schools. I protested at the date a while ago, but apparently it is the only gap in the calendar. However, next year it could be a little nearer to home. Entry form from me or contact Graham Howell on 01454 261458

COACHING UPGRADE WORKSHOP

A chance to earn 4 credits from this two-day, mid week course held at Par on Wednesday’s 25th May and 1st June. Past experience proves that these are fun and informative. (Note change from original dates). Contact Jacky Brett on her mobile 07966892283

MALCOLM ARNOLD

The Malcolm Arnold workshops are by invitation only because we do not want him to be inundated with a mass of athletes covering a vast range of capabilities. This would achieve very little. Younger athletes should not worry, something similar will happen when they are older.

LONG JUMP

North Devon’s long jump coach, Rod Linskill, who currently has athletes over 7 metres, is coming to run a course at Carn Brea on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th May. Beginners of all kinds are welcome in the morning from 10.30 (Register from 10am £1.50) After lunch, experienced athletes are invited to come along providing you have cleared 4.50m (Girls/women) or 5.0m (boys/men). Registration from 1pm £2.50) An excellent opportunity to hone skills one week before the county schools that will be held in the same pit.

CARN BREA

Following the recent track inspection that granted a restricted competition certificate, the throwing cage and jumping mats have been removed ready for new ones to be installed, which should be done by the end of May (Don’t hold your breath).

COACHING TIP. Failure to prepare is to prepare to fail. Have you prepared next weeks programme yet?
