CORNWALL COUNTY AA COACHING
AUGUST 2008 NEWSLETTER
MARATHON RUNNING. I am currently reading ‘The London Marathon’ by John Bryant, a very interesting read and a worthy present to any interested runner, and not just a book full of facts, but it has a soul to it. One of the few remaining runners who have done every London, mentioned the difference between today’s runners and those of the past, and whilst I’m sure you have heard it all before, but as he pointed out, running the marathon may have had small entries but it was a serious business and people trained hard, consequently there were lots of Brits running around 2:20 or better, whereas today’s marathon runners do not appear to have that level of dedication. It is a sad fact that Dave Buzza is still ranked as the 5th fastest Brit over the past 15 years. And if you think I am talking without experience, let me say I have 22 marathons under my belt and have coached just as many to run 2:23 or better. So all I ask is that you consider asking some seriously good road runners if they would care to give one year of dedicated training and let’s see if we can’t get another international runner coming out of the excellent facilities we have here in Cornwall.
PHOTOGRAPHY. Ester Rantzen of Childline, along with several others were talking on the Richard and Judy show and pointed out that contrary to popular belief there was no legislation to prevent the taking of photographs of children.
SPIKES MAGAZINE I hope you got this information that I forwarded to as many as possible. In fact the computer crashed when I put 252 names on the distribution list. Since it is connected to the IAAF I suspect it is replacing the IAAF quarterly technical bulletin, which was an extremely good magazine, if sometimes complex
TRIPLE JUMP
I am attaching a copy of an article on this discipline that appeared in The Guardian newspaper and I though worthy of using for anybody connected with coaching triple jump. [See below]
INSTANT ICE PACK
These useful twin packs are available at Macsalvors, near Carn Brea at 99p
HIGH JUMP
Master high jump coach Mike Dolby will be conducting training workshops at Carn Bea on Tuesday 29th July and Par on Wednesday 30th July, in each case from 6.30-8.30pm. All athletes are welcome. This is the result of the regional jumps coach, Peter Sneary, visiting the county to run some horizontal jumps workshops and answering the request for vertical jump coaching.
2012 OLYMPICS
To celebrate Cornwall being an official training centre for foreign teams in 2012 there will be a 1 HOUR relay challenge for teams of 4 at Carn Brea on 24th August at 2.30pm. This coincides with the time in China when the Games will officially be handed over to London.
Entry fee is £1 per athlete, to include a participation certificate and prizes for the first men’s, women and mixed teams, and whilst plans are not yet finalised, there are moves to include swimming and cycling relays on the same day and a gymnastics display on the infield. Confirmation will be available ‘drectly’ I would like to know of ant interest before completing the arrangements.
