CORNWALL COUNTY AA

February 2007 NEWSLETTER

REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The second annual regional conference will again be held at Exeter Golf and Country Club on Sunday 11th March from 10am to 4.30pm. There will be three workshops during the day, each divided into parts covering coaching, officials, education, disabilities,, competition, women and girls, road running, cross country, track and field etc. and it is FREE. There wil be the opportunity to voice your opinion and have an input towards the development of the sport in the region.

A DINNER is also planned for the evening before, for a very reasonable £15 with an offer for discounted accommodation for those that want it. PLEASE APPLY AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN either on line or through the attached application form. Last year was certainly worthwhile, even if it was only to meet people in the region outside of competition..

REGIONAL WEBSITE has changed to www.englandathletics.org/south-west , and is much better than the old one

There are over 1000 coaches in the south west who have not completed their licence renewal, which means they will not be covered by UKA insurance in the event of an accident. Filling in a form is a small price to pay for peace of mind, even for those who are anti disestablishment.

REGIONAL TRACK AND FIELD SQUAD There are now 18 athletes from Cornwall in the squad. Selected athletes who have missed the first workshop should be encouraged to attend those in the future, for apart from the training opportunity with athletes of a similar calibre, it may help those with plans for a sports scholarship in the future. I am looking into the use of a mini bus to reduce costs.

COUNTY SQUAD TRAINING. The next workshop is on 10th February at Carn Brea from 1pm to 4pm at the latest. (£2) With the first competition of the year less than two months away, athletes should be getting motivated. Hiring Carn Brea is expensive. Remember the saying, ‘Use it or lose it’

COUNTY AGM To be held at Summercourt Memorial Hall on Monday 12th 7pm. This is your chance to have an input into how the county’s athletics are run. Bring along anyone who is interested in helping to keep the sport vibrant.

AWARD FOR ALL. We have received a further £3350 for training purposes. This sum is subdivided into catergories of £1600 for coaching, £1000 for hire of facilities, £400 for Disability athletics and £350 for equipment to help us acieve our training objectives. The Training Objectives were outlined in the application as a continuation of the work initially started with the 2012 squad. Any ideas that will enhance the improvement of athletics in the County will be considered.

SUPPORT TO ATTEND COACHING COURSES up to 50% is available for all level of coaching courses. An application form is available on the above website or from me.

GOVERNMENT PROTEST. The proposed new road tax plan could see the death nell of volunteer work if we have to pay extra road tax to go to training and competitions If you want to protest about it before Feb 20th go to http:// petitions.pm.gov.uk/traveltax to register your complaint.

CORNWALL SPORTS AWARD. The Sports Partnership annual awards are available in a variety of categories. Young Performer Coach of the Year, Young Coach U25 of the Year, Male and female coach of the year, Club of the year, Official of the year, For further information contact Natasha Sando 01872

PRE OLYMPIC CAMP BID. Six sports in Cornwall have put in bids, including ourselves. The London 2012 inspectors are coming to Carn Brea and Tremough campus on 16th Feb. Due to an inspection period of only 1½ hour it was not possible to include Par on the visit, although they remain a significant part of the bid.324391 or www.cornwallsportspartnership.co.uk

ROAD RUNNING I can only repeat what I have said in the past. Most of the work I am involved in revolves around track and field because that is the area I am most exposed to, but that does not mean I do not want to help road running. It needs the road running clubs to say what they think would benefit them.

DISABILITY ATHLETICS. We are looking into how we can help this branch of the sport. Any ideas will be most welcome.
