Not a lot has been going on since last month except a great deal of planning, which hopefully includes you as well as me. Last month I mentioned testing in connection with the Cornwall College evening, and they assure me that a further session is on the cards, but this time, without small children please. Meanwhile I shall attach some tests that I have come across.
5000/10000m INITIATIVE. Having looked at the UK rankings for these events I thought that surely Cornwall, with its hills and dunes and tradition for producing endurance athletes, could make some inroads into the Top 50, and possibly the national scene, so I talked to International Dave Buzza, who incidentally is ranked in the UK over the ½ marathon, and he agreed to lead a drive to see what can be achieved in Cornwall. The 2005 figures are. Men 5000m 50th 14:31.51,Women 17:12.21 Men 10k 28th 30:53, women 23rd 36:29.48. Very soon we shall be looking more closely at these events, but in the meantime I would be very interested to hear about any athletes or coaches who wants to give it a go. No age limits
BLITZ ON THE HIGH JUMP.
Last year saw some progress in this event, with at least 4 of the better
athletes in the county now attending The Gym for strength training. This will
be backed up by an indoor high jump training session and competition at the St
Austell Table Tennis Centre on Sunday 26th February, starting at
10am with a training session that itself will be divided up to accommodate
different heights. (THE MINIMUM HEIGHT WILL BE 1,30) Following this will be a
talk on knee injuries by Dr. E Brown, and then the competition, for which we
have requested officials, since the results will undoubtedly include some
county indoor records. The following week there is the opportunity to compete
in the national indoor competition at Birmingham, for which the qualifying
times have already been sent to athletes.
2012 SQUAD AND COUNTY SQUADS. What will happen to the 2012 Squad after August when the Award for All grant runs out?
Well, athletes will have had two years to prove themselves, therefore it is anticipated that a much small squad that have achieve national ranking status will be left to concentrate on getting to London in 2012, with some help from outside where it is though necessary. The County Squad for track and field will continue, perhaps with a more streamlined format.
PLAUDIT National statistics show that Cornwall achieved one of the highest places in the country for training young athletes, and if you take the population of counties into account it is no doubt number 1, for which we should thank the hard work of Jacky Brett when she was ADO
CARN BREA .The tenders for the track refurbishment are being approved as you read this, and it is anticipated to take place in early April, but don’t hold your breath.
AGM 7pm Monday 13th Feb Summercourt Memorial Hall. Now that the County has pulled itself out of the doldrums, why don’t you make it a date?
WEBSITES. www.sportsaid.org.uk helps aspiring young men and women with a grant, predominantly age 12-16, and they have money available. ukathletics.net/performance/strength for endurance is good, they will even do you a programme (as will I, but I need to see you first)
