CORNWALL COUNTY AA COACHING

JULY 2008 NEWSLETTER

National age group combined events championships

These also incorporate the Midland and Welsh Championships, and the entry forms, plus qualifying standards are now available on the England Athletics website. (The second entry form at 57kb is the most valuable) Interestingly, many of the qualifying marks are higher than ESAA. Under 15/17 closing date is 21st Venue Birmingham 16/17 August.

Jumps development

Peter Sneary, the regional jumps coach has been in the county during June to give advice to athletes and coaches, and the feedback I have heard has been very positive. During a meeting about future development during the winter, plyometrics circuits came high on the agenda. Newquay & Par already have an established circuit going at Bodmin on Monday nights, which is not confined to members of that club but open to athletes from anywhere. Interested coaches should contact Roland Mark. Meanwhile at CAC there have been circuits on Wednesday at Pool school, run by Dave Buzza, and the sprinters will be joined by the jumpers on Tuesday evenings.

Insurance

It is worth knowing just what you are insured for, and since the shake up of UKA they have a new insurer in Oval, that covers coaches for third party in the event of

That last part is interesting. Does qualified mean having at least a level 2 certificate and must it be in the event you are advising about? If I were to advise a high jumper, for example, would I be covered if they were injured, or does my level one experience cover it? For further information look at insurance on England Athletics website.

County Development Plan

The outcome of a June development meeting reviewed the plan that expired in March and it showed that the county had met most of the requirements. We then went over a new plan along similar lines, but using some adjusted parameters, the details of which will be available ‘drectly’

 County School Championships

If you listened to anybody who was at Par on the 14th of the month they would tell you that the attendance was down on previous years, which only the schools themselves can influence, however, we as coaches can have some direct bearing on the performance levels of the athletes before they get to the championships, and if they are good enough the schools will select them.

When it came to the Region Schools competition there were some very good performances from the county

Replacement of energy in or after training

Have you tried encouraging your athletes to experiment with energy replacement during or after training. There are lots of good drinks around, including Poweraid and Lucosade Energy. Banana and dried fruit are also a rich source of energy.
