Some of you may well have received some of the information in this month’s newssheet. However, can I emphasise it is not good coaching etiquette to approach an athlete who is already being coached and suggest that they switch to yourself. If an athlete asks about switching coaches, that is a very different thing, but PLEASE, let us not start poaching from other coaches.
COACHING CONFERENCE IN BATH Thursday 26th July 10 am onwards until 8pm if you want to stay that late. There are some excellent workshops to choose from, including Steve Backley, Joslyn Hoit-Smith, and many others covering a wide range of subjects from talent identification, developing athletes, working with potential international athletes. I have the full programme if anybody else wants to go.
NEW LEVEL 3 PILOT. These weekend courses will begin in October, with dates not specified at the moment. But if you are interested, contact Morag Ford at regional office, Exeter, or on mford@englandathletics.org/southwest The cost will be in the region of £100-200, but there is a scheme to get a 50% subsidy.
SOUTH WEST INTERCOUNTIES TRACK AND FIELD. 5th
August Exeter.
The qualifying standards for this event will be listed on the regional website very soon. One athlete per county as a representative in each event, plus up to 3 other athletes per county if they meet the qualifying standard.
This coincides with the next Regional Coaching Development meeting, so if you have any ideas, please let me know before then.
AAA’S STANDARDS Thanks to two coaches informing me of the new standards, these can be forwarded by myself to anyone who wants them on email, or from the AAA website, after a good deal of searching.
EQUIPMENT The county now owns 4 x 4kg medicine balls, 2 javee trainers, 4 throwing balls and a power sledge. They are housed at Carn Brea but open for use by clubs in the county, just so long as I have a signature for their use, and they are returned after the agreed period of time.
RELAY EVENING Thursday 16th September is the projected date for this evening fixture at Carn Brea. Last year’s test run went very well with a quick turn over of races that were also open to non-athletic clubs. When the details are finalised everybody will be informed.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COURSE. POLTAIR, 7TH July £10 This should be an excellent course involving medicine ball and other easy to do exercises suitable to all events, even road runners. A successful London runner this year did a strength workout for the two months prior to the race and was able to do the Three Peaks a fortnight later. Application form can be found on www.englandathletics.org/southwest/coaching/coachingworkshops
