CORNWALL COUNTY AA COACHING

OCTOBER 2005 NEWSLETTER

JACKY BRETT By now most of you will be aware that Jacky has resigned from her post as Athletic Development Officer, which can only be a great loss for Cornwall. We worked as a team, and it is thanks to her dedication to duty going far beyond her part time working hours, that our sport has advanced in the past three years. Because of her diverse range of duties, many of you would not be aware of half the work she did, especially with schools, coaching courses etc. She has presented a hard act to follow. Fortunately she will still be around to do some coaching. In the meanwhile, if you have any queries you can address them to me or Mo Pearson who has been appointed Community Coach, with a different agenda to Jacky’s, or to Vicky Gregory, both the latter are available on 01872 324385.

CHILD PROTECTION It is not too late to get on the final 3 hour course of this year at Richard Lander School, Truro, by ringing Vicky Gregory at the Partnership

COACHING FORUM: This year promises to be the best forum to date, with some excellent speakers to give ‘hands on’ experience in footwear, testing athletes, physiotherapy and a view of how badminton players train, plus oc course, your chance to discuss topics. PLEASE try to be there, Sunday 23rd October 1.30-5.30 in the Grampound Community Hall. It would help if you can give me a ring beforehand so that refreshments are available. Remember, it is free, and bring along your coaching licence if you wish to record two credits..

CIRCUIT TRAINING We all know that you do very little practical work at level 1 or 2, but this is an excellent opportunity to either get involved or simply watch, as the workshop goes through a variety of ways to apply circuit training to all ages, for pure strength or endurance, and I can guarantee that you will learn something. The workshop ends up with practical applications of PNF stretching. For £10 it is worth every penny, and two credits to boot. Sunday 20th November at Grampound Community Hall, 1.30-5.30. You will not be disappointed, but I must have names by at least one week in advance.

LEVEL 3 EVENT COURSE  At the recent County coaches meeting there were two major reasons expressed for not progressing to level 3. a) Too expensive and b) Too far to travel. Well, it may be possible to address the latter if you let me know in which event you are interested, and I shall forward the information. Just pick up the phone or press a few keys and let me know.

LEVEL 2 in Truro, November is filling up rapidly, only £50 for county residents, but you must have level 1 and be over 18 years old.

O NO, NOT WALKING AGAIN!  In just 4 weeks of training we put a team into the English Schools and didn’t do badly at all. In 2007 the same competition will be coming to Exeter, and as you may have noticed, it appeared as a test event in the South West league this year. It was Pete Meredith who said that with a bit of effort we could put together a decent team, and after only 3 weeks training, sprinter Kim Davey said she was feeling stonger and faster Bev Pearce is chipping in with organising some short road races, beginning on 6th November, 10.30 am at the Boscawen Park Scout Hut in Truro (entry fee £3). So why not encourage some of your athletes to come along

STRENGTH TRAINING. It’s that time of the year again to address your strength training programme. If you are unfamiliar with what to do, give me a call and I can arrange for some instruction at The Gym in Truro where I work. In last weeks AW an article about the beautiful and graceful woman’s 200m World Champion gave a sample of the weights she was lifting at 16 years of age, and in the same magazine an article on discus throwing further emphasised weights, sprinting speed and endurance, and incidentally, Paula Radcliffe also lifts weights.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING WEEKEND. The venue is unconfirmed, but the date is set at March 2006 for a cost of £100

TRAINING SQUADS. The South West squad for athletes with national potential will be notified by letter soon, while the 2012 squad will be made up of under 13’s with grade one and all others under 23 with grade 1 or 2. In addition to this, a County Squad will be offered training for under 13’s with grade 2 and all ages from under 23 with grade 3. County specific event coaches will be involved with the details of the training.
