CORNWALL COUNTY COACHING

NOVEMBER 2004 NEWSLETTER

TARGET 2012 This project is now in full swing, aimed at attracting athletes with Grade 2 and aged between 14 and 22 years of age to encourage them to try a little harder and possibly be good enough to reach the 2012 Olympic Games. To date only track and field athletes have been identified, but any recommendation for athletes with an outstanding performances on the road over 10k, 10 miles or half marathon will be considered. The project has been given an Award for All grant specifically for training and this is being used for athletes over 15 to attend gym sessions, plus event specific training during the winter.

RACE WALKING Following a pilot session at Par, attended by four athletes, Bev Pearce has taken on the role of County Walking coach. Further training sessions will be held in conjunction with each monthly throws day throughout the winter, thus making better utilization of the facilities. Each session will cost £2, the next one being Sunday 5th December, 10.30am at Carn Brea, meeting Bev in the canteen. Thereafter the dates may change to Saturdays, depending on demand. All coaches will be notified, but please DO encourage athletes to try.

EVENT SPECIFIC DAYS. More of these are planned throughout the winter, some being sponsored by Cornwall Sports Partnership and some by Cornwall Athletic Association.

SOUTH WEST DEVELOPMENT MEETING. I attended this meeting and brought up the suggestions that were sent to me. They will now go along with others for analysis and forwarding to whoever needs to know. Points that arose at the coaches meeting were:

·         There was a strong feeling for more exposure of international athletes at training courses in the region.

·         Day 3 of level 2 courses should be held at a geographical location best suited to the participants

·         More explicit information about suitable courses to maintain credit levels.

·         Event specific courses should be held in the region

·         Coaches should not have to pay for Criminal Records checks.

·         Coaches from the HPC at Bath should be prepared to assist locally run courses

·         Level 1 should include rules of events.

·         Recognition of times when it is necessary to pass an athlete on to another coach should be included in Level 2

AVAILABILITY OF HIGHER LEVEL COACHES

Sonya Ellis has funding to pay for specialist coaches to come to Cornwall. Before I make any move on this I would appreciate your suggestions.

BEACH TRAINING

Two more days are planned for this year, both on Saturday 11th December at Crantock (Tony Lett or Jacky contact) or Whitchurch (See M Erith for this one) Both start at 10am and cost £2

THROWS TRAINING

OSGOOD SCHLATTER

The separation of the head of the tibia bone just below the knee, and most prevalent in girls aged 13-15 or boys 14-16 years old, often brought on by twisting stresses such as playing rugby. The risk can be reduced by increasing bone density through bounding exercises as part of their training
