COUNTY RELAYS

For the participating athletes, these were a success, but they were sadly lacking depth. There was some thought about putting them on earlier in the season next year. What do you think, and would you support them?

Relays are great team and moral builders and can involve lots of club members. Would they be more appealing if there were prizes?

DEVELOPMENT DAY OCTOBER 18TH

A selection of about 20 athletes aged 12 to 15, who featured in the upper ranks this year, have been invited to attend a development day at St. Austell Table Tennis Club, along with a similar number of athletes from other sports. The programme is therefore not event specific but designed to cover strength, speed, endurance and throwing, all of benefit to this age group, regardless of their event.

Individual athletes coaches are welcome to attend, but it should be fair to say that recently appointed Level 1 coaches will be on hand to assist the team. This is deliberate, to give them the chance to improve their skills under the watchful control of the course tutors.

SPEED/SPRINT DEVELOPMENT DAY Saturday November 1st

The final development day of the year. VENUE:CRANTOCK NATIONAL TRUST CAR PARK from where we have easy access to the sand dunes, Start at 10.30am for a varied programme of activity that should finish around midday, after which I would hope to have a short meeting with all of the coaches present to discus any future activity. ALL FREE

ENDURANCE WORKSHOP 4TH OCTOBER

41 participants found this to be a very informative and useful workshop, with a request for something similar in the Tamar area.

COACHES FORUM 5TH OCTOBER

A greater number of participants this year, also agreeing that it should be repeated next year.

The turnover of speakers and activities helped to keep everybody alert, and apparently enjoying themselves

ACTIVE SPORTS

Following several queries I thought it worthwhile to explain what Active Sport is all about. It is a Sport England initiative, funded by them through the County Council for the benefit of 9 major sports, each with its own Development Officer, Jacky Brett being the ADO for Athletics.

A major objective of Active Sports for us is to get more children involved in athletics, through encouraging ‘after school’ activities (taster sessions) that should lead to more children joining established clubs.. The ADO also organises athletics for the annual Youth Games, together with more taster/training sessions in the build up period. This works quite well, helping to develop young athletes who DO go on to joining clubs. Judging from last years response in the Truro area there is already a demand for a junior division or satellite of an existing club, if anybody wishes to take it on.  As Active Sports portfolio expands, so will its benefits to the sport. Active Sports also has access to funding that can subsidize Coach Education if applications are made through their office in Three Milestone via Jacky Brett. Active Sports is working WITH the established clubs for their benefit. Incidentally, I was recently appointed Head Coach (very, very part time)

DEVOLUTION OF ENGLAND BY REGIONS

UKA have ran into some opposition over making each region more self contained and therefore things are at a stalemate, but changes are on the cards, so the sooner it comes about the sooner the South West can advance with stronger league fixtures

HIGH JUMP. As nobody turned up at Carn Brea for the two organised Sunday coaching session, these will not continue as planned. However, the coach has offered to help whenever there is a request. Speak to Tony if you are interested.
