COUNTY COACHES MEETING 10TH SEPTEMBER 2005
As
usual there was a degree of apathy about county coaches meetings that was
reflected in the attendance, which would appear to indicate that most people
are happy with the way things are going and do not wish to make any changes,
which is fine, but it leaves little room for complaints when things do not meet
individual wishes.
The
following were agreed.
Sprints/hurdles Tony Lett
Middle
Distance Pete Meredith
Long
Distance Viv Mathews
Throws Mo
Pearson (Shot) Hammer: Shaun
Jones, Discus Sue Moulton
Jumps High
jump: Bob Ingle
Each event group to organise their winter training
using the dates on the calendar, plus any other dates they find necessary. The
venues for beach training should be suitable to all disciplines, with other
venues to be booked. There will be a delay in booking these until it is clear
whether the UKA funding to support pole vault training is in place, when it
will then a better to organise utilisation of the same venue for cost
effectiveness.
2012 and County squads. There is funding to support 2012 schemes through to April,
therefore a training squad of Grade 1 and 2 athletes has been names (grade 1
only for under 13’s) Alongside this a County training squad of grade 3 &4
achievers has been named for further training.
Cost of county training sessions. Due to the high cost of
booking venues (Around £150 per day) it was agreed to charge the athletes
£1.50 per hour.
External coaches/international athletes
To bring international athletes to Cornwall will be
expensive unless it is done on a personal front, otherwise it could be
extremely expensive, but regional or international coaches could be requested
at no cost, as already experienced. Tony to look into athletes Lorraine Shaw or
Jemma Simpson coming, or coaches Bud Baldaro or Mark Rowland. If either of the
two coaches come, then it would be ideal to hold a coaching weekend. (Pete
Meredith to organise)
Mike Dolby has already agreed to come in March for
high jump.
Links between clubs and schools
Clubs are making some ad hoc integration with
schools but more could be done. Clubs should make provision for an influx of
members when they implement it, either from personal contact, after school
taster sessions or appearances by athletes, by arrangement with the school.
South West squad days
These have traditionally been held only at Bath, but
this year the 6th November and 18th December have been
designated to diversify in our direction to cut travelling costs. More news
when the venue and invited athletes have been confirmed.
Electronic timing The cost of £7640 +VAT looks prohibitive, but
if this was split 3 ways between N&P and CAC plus the County, together with
match funding, then it looks more promising. Matter to go to County meeting.
Strength training. More coaches to be
encouraged to implement this training medium. Tony, Shaun and Sue willing to help and give guidance to
coaches. It’s up to you to ask.
Challenge events. To help raise the standard of competition and
entry at Cornwall Open meeting it is suggested that a specific discipline could
be targeted as a challenge (eg. Throws or sprints etc.) and athletes contesting
each match score points according to the decathlon of five-star tables. Winners
to receive a sports voucher from sponsors, and wouldn’t it be nice if their
coaches also received something. Idea to be put to the County, since it could
also be extended to include any event and all athletes.
Race Walking. Some of the national standards are quite low and we
should look at promoting athletes to give it a try.
Circuit training. The course on 20th November will
benefit everybody.
Licence renewal There are still one or two coaches who have
not renewed their licence. Do it now or you will not be insured.
