General Introduction

Welcome to the Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Centre GP Annual Awards 2008

The 2008 GP was again competed over 14 races ranging from the 4 mile Turkey Trot to the Duchy and Cornish Marathons. A minimum of 8 completed races was the requirement to feature in the final GP standings and receive a ‘Finisher’s Memento’.

The pattern of recent years was again apparent, with the majority of races showing a significant rise in entries, locally and from ‘out of county’.

The Indian Queens Half Marathon had a major route change this year and was rewarded with a record field, with the ‘Trail Aspect’ proving popular.

521 men (478 in 2007) and 415 ladies (397 in 2007) have entered at least one event this year and 174 (142 in 2007) have completed their 8 races, plus all vets categories.

2008 also saw the introduction of a ‘Mini GP Series’ for Under 20’s in the hope that it would encourage the younger runners to participate in the shorter events. This proved very popular as the awards will show later.

The 2009 Grand Prix will include all the 2008 races with the addition of a Newquay Roadrunners Trevornick Trot Multi-Terrain 10 miler, at Holywell Bay in April. There will still be an 8 race requirement from the 15 races.

St Austell Running Club was a newly started club mentioned in last year’s presentation, and they will be staging a Full and Half Multi-Terrain Marathon from the Eden Project in October 2009. This will not be a GP event.

All the trophies on display here today are provided by St Austell Trophies and they have been very co-operative again this year, as the final positions and number of 8 race qualifiers were not known until after last Sunday’s Cornish Marathon. As you can imagine it’s been a hectic week for them.

St Austell Trophies supply medals, memento’s, club clothing, etc, so please give him a ring if you want a price for your Race Prize list. Tim can be contacted on 01726 73077 or www.staustell-trophies.co.uk

Introduction :

to Ged Gilchrist of Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Centre at St Austell, who has sponsored the GP for the last 3 years.

This term was always Ged’s intention and he has decided to finish this year. The annual financial contribution from Ged is always spent entirely on these awards and we are all very grateful for the support from Ged and his team. I hope we have supported Ged and his physio team at Sandy Hill during his sponsorship term and will pass you over to Ged to say a few words…………and hand over his cheque!!

Most Improved Runners 2008

These 2 awards are for the Most Improved Male and Female Runners throughout all competing clubs in the Grand Prix.

The awards are open to runners of all abilities and paces, who have made big improvements in their race times from year to year.

Each club has had the opportunity to nominate potential candidates for consideration by a panel of 4, who have decided on the eventual winners.

The following nominations were put forward by their clubs………

Cliff Temple Shield (Most Improved Female Runner of 2008)

Faye Toms (Hayle Runners) unlucky to finish 2nd after casting vote

Suzy Bosustow (Cornwall Athletic Club)

Nancy Hill (Mounts Bay Harriers) winner

Rachel Bestwick (St Austell Running Club)

St Austell Trophies Shield (Most Improved Male Runner of 2008)

Pete Ellis (Hayle Runners)

Geoff Harris (Newquay Roadrunners) runner up in a very close second

Ian Crowle (East Cornwall Harriers)

Mark Omori (Mounts Bay Harriers) winner

Bruce Maclaren (St Austell Running Club)

There were some excellent performances by all these contenders and each one would have been a worthy winner in their own right, but the panel of 4 made the following decision.

Cliff Temple Shield (Most Improved Female Runner of 2008)

Nancy Hill (Mounts Bay Harriers)

St Austell Trophies Shield (Most Improved Male Runner of 2008)
