FLORA LONDON MARATHON 2008  -  CORNISH RUNNING CLUB'S RESULTS

THE SERVICE REMEMBERING KEVIN SHARP  -  19th April 2008
 Posted on this website 23-04-08

Last Saturday morning, around 120 people attended the memorial service conducted by the Rev Chris McQuillen-Wright, to remember Kevin Sharp. Among those present were many of Kevins family, friends and works colleagues, together with a large contingent from our running club.

The venue was Baby Bay beach at New Polzeath, one of Kev's favourite spots. It was a very cold, wet and windy day, and the six large candles placed strategically behind the rocks fought a valiant effort with the elements to stay alight.

Although a day to celebrate the life of Kevin, there were still many tears of sadness, but there were even more tears of joy and happiness, as various friends and colleagues related their memories of Kev.

As we all knew, Kev lived life to the full.  We learned of his warmth and friendship to everyone he came in contact with, his love of the odd sherbert or three, his various exploits at night clubs around the County, and yes, even the odd ocassion  that it became necessary for him to be 'looked after' by the local constabulary for a few hours.

Kev loved nothing more than the 'Great Outdoors' That was where he worked, rested and played, and wherever he went, he left his mark.

Wherever you now lay Kev, Rest in Peace. We shall never forget you. You shall forever remain in our thoughts.

NEWQUAY ROAD RUNNERS CAMEL TRAIL TRAINING RUNS 2008.
 Posted on this website 20-01-08

Continuing their tradition of recent years, Newquay Road Runners would like to invite all runners and joggers to their annual social training runs along the Camel Trail on Sundays January 27th and February 10th. Both runs will start at 9-30am from the car park at the rear of the Borough Arms, nr Bodmin, (please ensure that you park at the rear of the pub, and NOT the actual pub car park.)

In recent years, these two runs have attracted well over 100 runners from all over the South West, and provide the ideal opportunity of a long run in company, especially if you are training for a spring marathon. How far you go or how fast is entirely up to you, but we all set off together and head off towards the end off the trail on the edge of Bodmin Moor, which is now around 7 miles. If you dont wish to go all the way, there will no doubt be several who will be ready turn round at some stage earlier and make their way back with you. Those looking for a really long run return to the start and then head off in the opposite direction towards Wadebridge.

If you are not a member of a club, then this meet also gives you an ideal opportunity to meet members of local clubs who will be present, and perhaps pick their brains for a bit of help and advice with your training etc.

There is no charge for taking part, but all donations dropped into the bucket that is passed around will be gratefully accepted, and passed on to the charity nominated and advised on the day.

Anyone requiring any further details or information can contact our club secretary Kevin Burnett Tel. 01726 860631

KEVIN SHARP UPDATE  -  Thursday 17th January 2008
Posted on this website 20-01-08

Due to the unexpected early improvement in the weather conditions in the Andes, the Chilean mountain rescue team returned to the mountain earlier this week.

After a few days acclimatizing close to the summit, they then plan to resume their search for Kevin tomorrow.

We wish them well, and a safe return.

Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Centre Sponsors the
Cornish Road Running Grand Prix for a third consecutive year.

GED GILCHRIST CHEQUE PRESENTATION

The 2007 Grand prix broke all previous records for the total number of participants, award winners and runners who completed all events in the series.   It consists of 14 quality races, at distances from 4 miles up to full marathon, throughout the county.   It acts as a league table, where all members of affiliated running clubs are allocated points for their finishing positions in each race.   Runners who complete 8 of the races are awarded a trophy and if a runner completes more than the minimum of 8 then the best results are used.

Chairman of the Grand Prix committee Doug Alsop says - “We are very grateful to Ged Gilchrist of the Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Centre for his continued support and generous sponsorship.  The Grand prix adds another dimension to running in the County by increasing the competition throughout the field.  To be the overall winner of the Grand Prix is a great achievement but the benefit of the GP is that it is divided into gender and age categories and these are fiercely contested, with runners eagerly waiting to check their standing on the publication of the updated tables after each race.   Road Running in Cornwall is growing in popularity and the Grand Prix stimulates healthy competition at both the individual and team level and generates a sense of camaraderie that is the envy of other Counties”.

Ged Gilchrist of the Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Centre St.Austell presented the annual awards at the Falmouth Beach Hotel on Sunday 25th of November and pledged his ongoing support for the 2008 series.   Ged says he is delighted to continue his association with this worthwhile endeavour.   The Centre treats athletes from all sports disciplines with a staff of five physios, who offer a range of treatments including massage, sports massage and Pilates.  Next year they plan to run weekly classes working with large balls – these will be incorporated into an exercise programme designed to develop core stability and consequently improve all round performance.

The 2008 series of races will commence with the “Blaythorne 10” 10 mile road race on 20th of January and follows on with the “Mounts Bay 10k race on 3rd February. For details of all GP events and results see www.cornwallroadrunning.co.uk

KEVIN SHARP    NEWQUAY ROAD RUNNERS.
Posted on this website 11-12-07

There is now mounting concern as to the whereabouts and safety of club member Kevin Sharp. Although precise details have yet to be confirmed, it is believed that earlier last month, Kevin together with five colleagues embarked on a climbing expedition in the mountains of Chile. As they progressed, his colleagues, at varying times began to experience  problems due to the altitude and aborted their journey. Kevin then proceeded the climb alone, but it is now around four weeks since he has been seen or any contact made.
I understand from a member of the club, that Kevin is an experienced mountain climber and therefore knows what actions to take in the case of any emergency.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Kevin and his family during this extremely worrying time.

DAVE BUZZA RETAINS MARATHON TITLE
Posted on this website 05-09-07

Former Great Britain international marathon star, Dave Buzza  retained his European Minorities Marathon title in Germany on Sunday (2nd September 2007)

Representing his home county of Cornwall, Dave recorded a time of 2hours 32 mins 25secs, more than three minutes quicker than his time last year. Finishing over 6 minutes clear of his nearest rival, Dave was just one of eleven runners to break the three hour barrier.

CORNWALL v DEVON PENINSULAR CHALLENGE.

PLYMOUTH HOE 10  -  18th FEBRUARY 2007

The second Inter County challenge incorporated within the Plymouth Hoe 10 mile race resulted in comfortable victories for the home County in both the men's and ladies teams.

The Cornwall men's team were magnificently led by their Newquay and Par star cross country runner Kevin Toher. For the entire race, he had set the pace with the Devon No. 1 Kairn Stone, happy to sit on his shoulder. However, coming off the final bend of the track, Kairn slowly but surely eased into the lead, and after a long sprint down the finishing straight, finished just a couple of strides clear of a gallant Kevin.
Amazingly, this was Kevin's first ever serious road race, his only previous experience being the Wadebridge 7 mile road race as a very young teenager around 20 years ago.
Next home were the Cornwall A.C. duo Noel Kindon and Matt Pullen in 4th and 5th, followed by Peter Hillman, Tim Drew, Nick Martin, Jason Pascoe and Michael Semmens

Facing an extremely strong and talented Devon squad, an already weakened Cornwall ladies team suffered further setbacks on the eve of the race, with Helen Pearson sustaining an injury and Ann Luke failing to recover from illness. However all members put up an extremely spirited performance and gave their all, with Jo Friday, Kensa Rescorla, and late replacements Janet Ritchie and Suzy Bosusto all recording Personal bests, and Sharon Daw battling every yard of the circuit around the track to pip Stephanie Martin on the line.

Finally, sincere vote of thanks to all those who represented the County with pride and passion, many congratulations to the victorious Devon teams, and also thanks to Paul Ross and co for putting on an excellent event.

WANTED - CLUBS GOOD AT LOOKING AFTER THEIR VOLUNTEERS
Posted on this website 26-01-07

Hello

I have been requested by Sport England SW to recommend a couple of clubs who are particularly good at recruiting, retaining and looking after their volunteers.  One club from Cornwall will then be highlighted as a club of good practice and will have a short film made about them.  This will be shown at a Club Development evening to be held in Exeter in March.

Please could you let me know if you have any club you feel is particularly good at looking after their volunteers and the reasons why by the end of January.

  MESSAGE FROM PETE SARGENT

Before my first report of 2007, myself and Jan would like to take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the coming year, stay fit and healthy, and enjoy your running.

Hopefully, you all know what you would like to achieve during the coming twelve months. If not, set yourself some targets now. As Paula Radcliffe said, "Aim for the moon, if you fall short, you may still end up amongst the stars"

My own personal motto is "It is far, far better to have tried and failed, than not to have tried at all"  And thats what I shall be doing. Having missed much of the last eighteen months, I have tried to start running again, albeit very slowly due to total lack of fitness, and the little matter... ( that should read "large matter" ).... of an extra stone in weight. Then I shall be taking one day at a time, and see what happens.

Anyhow, what can we look forward to in the coming year? All members of affiliated Cornish running clubs can look forward to the 17th running of the Cornwall Road Running Grand Prix Series. The series will again be sponsored by Jed Gilchrist at the Sandy Hill Physical Therapy Centre in St Austell.

If you are not a member of a local club, then why not consider popping along to your local club. No matter how slowly or quickly you run, you will be made more than welcome. And remember, you then save yourself the additional £2 per race unattached levy fee. Full details and information on all the local clubs can be found elsewhere on this site.

This years series will comprise of the same 14 races as last year, with the usual rules and regulations in place. An updated copy of the rules will be appear elsewhere on the www.cornwallroadrunning.co.uk website.  CLICK HERE

One major change that will affect all runners relates to your standings in the Grand Prix tables, which are updated as soon as possible after each race. This year Doug Alsop and Garry Player will be responsible for compiling the Men's results, while Dawn Roberts will continue to look after  the Ladies. After each update, please ensure your own personal details are correct. Any errors will only be amended in the two most recent races.  If you do find an error, please report it to your own clubs representative, and NOT to Doug & Co.

Also there, you will find a full and comprehensive list of rules that all race organisers must adhere to. It is because these rules are carried out, that you the runner, will now know that the standards of organisation  in the GP series are second to none. Please take time out and spend a few minutes reading through the list. You will then realise just how much hard work and effort goes into putting a race on. If you agree with that, find a couple of minutes after your race just to say thanks to the organisers, or perhaps post a message of appreciation on their clubs website message board.

Looking ahead to Feb 18th and the Plymouth Hoe 10 mile road race. This race will again be incorporating a Cornwall v Devon Challenge, with eight runners in the men's team and six in the ladies. I shall shortly be contacting all clubs for the names of any members who wish to be considered for selection and are willing and available to represent the County on that day.

Good luck and best wishes.

PRS

ZELAH MORRALL'S INTERNATIONAL DEBUT

Posted on this website  02-10-06

Duchy Marathon - Pics: Mel Bonfield

ZELAH WINNING THE DUCHY MARATHON
MARCH 2006

What an international debut for Ludgvan physiotherapist Zelah Morrall (Cornwall AC), who represented England recently in the International Association of Ultra Running 50 kilometre World Championships at Winschoten, Holland. Zelah paced her race to perfection, winning by forty seconds over the five ten kilometre laps.

Zelah takes up the story, “a late morning start meant we were running in the heat of the day and with temperatures of 28 degrees C, hydration was my main concern if I was to survive the 50 kilometres (about 31 miles). The leading three women set off at a blistering pace, I stayed with them for the first few kilometres and then decided the pace was too fast at such an early stage and let them go ahead. At half way and with more than an hour and a half still to go, I was preparing myself mentally for the part of the race that I find the toughest, the stage when I'm tired but still have a long way to go. In the distance I could see one of the Australian girls and over the next few kilometres I closed in and then overtook her. I was in a podium position and the race suddenly felt easier. Ten kilometres later I caught the 2nd women and on the final lap, I increased my pace slightly and to my surprise at 42 kilometres, the marathon point, I overtook the first women and managed to hold the lead to the end, finishing just 40 seconds ahead in 3hours:31 minutes to win my first international race!”

ENGLAND ATHLETICS

REGIONAL GROUP EVENT COACHES - South West

(voluntary positions)

Speed, Endurance, Jumps, Throws & Combined Events

As part of the modernisation of the sport of athletics in readiness for Olympic success, England Athletics has been formed into nine regions.

The South West region now requires five group event coaches to lead squad activity in an equitable way throughout the region. The group event coach will appoint suitably qualified coaches for each discipline within their area.

The successful candidates for the posts will need to be qualified and experienced as well as capable of working with and supporting athletes’ coaches. Expenses will be paid for agreed regional coaching workshops or squads.

Knowledge and experience of athletics in a performance environment will be very helpful and a real enthusiasm for an athlete-centred approach will be essential.  The ability to develop talent, work with coaches and enthuse athletes will be an absolute key to success.

CORNISH ROAD RUNNERS AWARDED ENGLAND VESTS.
4th September 2006

Excellent performances in recent months has resulted in two Cornish road runners being awarded their first England vests.

Ludgvan athlete Zelah Morrall has been selected to represent England in the 50 kilometre road race championship at the IAU Trophy final at Winschoten in Holland next month.

It is the first international call for the Cornwall Athletic Club runner, who recently travelled to Boddington near Cheltenham to compete in the AAA 50 kilometre road race championship, finishing fourth, in 3 hours 38 minutes.

This was 12 minutes inside the qualifying time set for international representation. Fifty kilometres equates to a race distance of more than 30 miles, like racing from Penzance to just beyond Truro.

Zelah, a physiotherapist in Penzance, described how the race developed. She said: "It was my first attempt at the 50 kilometre distance. Although I had done much longer races in the mountains, I had never run more than the 26mile marathon distance on the road and knew that the flat multiloop course was going to be mentally very challenging.

"It was a windy day and the course was very exposed in sections. Pacing was difficult as there were no kilometre or mile markers but each of the 14 loops was 3.537 kilometres, so I had to work out my pace by the loop.

"Concentrating at getting my seven minutes a mile pace right proved to be a distraction for the first four or five loops. Then the race became mentally arduous, with no mountain views or hills to get stuck into but before I knew it, I had gone past the marathon stage and had just 3 loops to go, so I was on my way home. Just as it became mentally easier, my legs decided to claim some attention and I soon realised I'd been running hard for three hours and was feeling slightly tired.

"With my head down, I started battling against the wind, thinking the sooner I finish, the sooner I can have a rest."

Zelah caught the attention of the England selectors after her course-breaking victory in the Duchy Marathon last March and one month later produced a 2 hour 56 minute performance in the London Marathon.

Now she will be proudly wearing the England vest in Holland, where thankfully the course is only five laps.

A modest Zelah was keen to point out that much of her success is down to the many people who sponsored her in the London race last April, when she raised £510 for the Penlee RNLI.

Another Cornwall Athletic Club member, Redruth teacher Danny Simons, has also been offered his first international vest. Danny earned his vest after running 2hrs 23mins in the London Marathon this year and has been picked for the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon in late October.

He will take up the place if he recovers soon from the foot injury, which has interrupted his recent training and caused him to abandon plans to run the Berlin marathon at the end of September.

He will have to contend with the lack of oxygen at nearly 7000 feet, as well as a hilly course and probable high temperatures, so he hopes to travel to Kenya at least a week before the race, to achieve at least partial acclimatisation.
