RACE REVIEW:
AN RESEK HELLYS: 116 runners. New event organised by non-runners for charity, enjoyable.
SALTASH HALF: 104 runners. Down 26. Not very well organised, runners sent the wrong way.
NEWQUAY 10: 100 runners. Down 8. Good race, hard course, Will not be held in 2003.
BOLINGEY 10 K: No details available.
RACE FOR LIFE: 1411 runners. New event. Very good race, good atmosphere, congratulations
to KH for his input. No clubs benefited from recruitment of any new members.
TREE TOPS 5: 219 runners. Up 40. Race held for the first time on a Bank Holiday. Good race.
MEET YOUR MAX: 127 runners. (Race cancelled in 2001). Good event, plenty of mud.
STICKER 5: 217 runners. Up 9. Good event. GD. requested more food and cheaper beer.
LAUNCESTON HALF: 204 runners. Down 72. Well organised, but the race has gained a reputation
of being very hard, which tends to put runners off.
SUMMER TURKEY TROT: Good race, but problems in the Fun Run, where there was no segregation
in the closing stages, between the fun Runners, and the main race runners
“warming up”.
MAGNIFICENT 7 : `341 runners. Up 49. Good race and well organised. Encouraging to see a greater
interest from the Cornish clubs.
CORNWALL 10K: 244 runners. Down 35. Weather always hot! Race clashed this year with a new
event in Plymouth.
INDIAN QUEENS HALF : 174 runners. Up 25. Good marshalling essential on major road crossings.
Amended course has resulted in the impression of a “very long” final mile.
ST LEVEN 10K: 119 runners. Up 21. Good event on a safe course.
DUCHY MARATHON: 57 runners. (although there were70 entries). Down 4.Very few entries on
the day. Good flat course, but it is taking time for that fact to get around.
Race started late due to all the “wimps” not wishing to get wet beforehand.
TRURO HALF: 266 runners. Up 25. “Missing “ special resulted in too many runners choosing
which side of the road that they wanted to run on.!!
DEVIOCK BOUNDER. 81 runners. Up 20, due to invasion from across the Tamar, (the Trotters), and
across the Channel, (the “frogs). Good marshalling, but publicity poor (no entry
forms distributed), and start time put back one hour from that advertised.
REDRUTH 10 K : 91 runners. Up 30. Marshalling at certain crossings needs improving. N.Tweedie
maintained his unbeaten record for 2002
BEAST OF BODMIN: No numbers available. Non permitted race. Organised (not very well) by non
runners, who rejected offers of help. Next year will be encouraged to obtain a
permit.
SWEATSHOP/UK ATHLETICS ROAD RUNNING
GRAND PRIX.
Cornwall A.C. were congratulated on their success in this series, also UK Athletics for putting so much funding into road running. The 2003 series will see increased prize money, and accommodation paid for. There will be no individual competition . NT considers that the minimum requirement nationwide of only 3 qualifying races should be increased. Cornwall require a minimum of 6, and feels there should be greater consistency; he will continue to put his views forward to Sweatshop.
RACE START TIMES.
A general discussion took place, with various pros and cons put forward. The major concern was that an earlier start time would kill off the fun runs. The organisers of Launceston, St Eval, Mag 7 and Queens were asked to consider an earlier start, but it was decided that it should be left to individual race organisers to decide their start times. SM pointed out that runners would turn up no matter how early if they really wanted to do a particular race, quoting the London and the Comrades.
GRAND PRIX RACES FOR 2003.
It was agreed to replace the defunct Newquay 10 with the C.A.C. Summer Turkey Trot. The total number remains at 14, a minimum of 8 to count, 2 of which must be of 10 miles or above.
PROPOSED NEW MOB MATCH INITIATIVE AND
INTER COUNTY CHALLENGE FOR 2003
All clubs agreed it was a good idea. PS reported, that at the recent E.Cornwall/W.Devon Forum A.G.M there was a 100% supports from their member clubs. Pete Ferlie also requested, on behalf of the remaining Devon clubs to be advised of any developments, as they too, were keen to be involved., F.R.R. had mixed feelings about relinquishing the current Mob Match. It was their main fundraiser, and if was it lost, they would probably have to put on a replacement race. Obviously, they were also keen to continue the race in the memory of Trish Mace, who introduced the formulae of the race into the Cornish athletics calendar.
It was suggested and agreed that F.R.R. continue to organise the Mob Match next year, and suggested that the two counties mob match and the I.C.Challenge be arranged, if possible earlier in the year or not until 2004. NT had reservations that on the night, no details were available of where it would be, who would be organising it, how was it being financed, etc etc.
PS expressed doubts that the Cornish clubs would wish to, or be able to “rally the troops” for an additional mob match, and we should therefore forget the idea. DB also indicated that C.A.C. would be very reluctant to take on yet another representative race in an already very crowded fixture list.
JOB SHARING FOR 2003.
NT. decided it was time that his workload was spread around to enable him to get a proper job and resume his running career. Subsequently, DA has volunteered to chair the next meeting, DR will now be responsible for co-ordinating the G.P. series, and PS would take the minutes of the meetings
GRAND PRIX SPONSORSHIP.
Duchy Hospital contact David Hillier now no longer around, but NT. has no reason to believe that their £500 would not materialise. The loss of £250 from IBR, and no replacement being found, will be reflected by the absence of prizes to category winners at this years presentations. PB. agreed to purchase all trophies again.
Awards in the various veteran categories next year will be as follows: MEN 40/44, 45/49, 50/54, 55/59, 60/69, 70+ 1st 3. LADIES 35/39, 40/44, 45/49, 50/59, 60+ 1st 3. ME suggested that as teams are now listed, then they too should be included This would be considered depending on finance available.
ALL PRESENT WERE REQUESTED TO GO BACK
TO THEIR CLUBS, AND SEEK OUT ADDITIONAL SPONSORS.
THE GREAT CORNWALL RELAY RACE.
General consensus was that it was very ambitious, and would take a great deal of organising. Sounded very complicated, therefore much more information and detail required.
10 PENCE RACE LEVY.
Over the year, JAN S. reported that this has raised a total of £163.70, of which £73.92 has been spent on ink and paper etc, leaving a balance of £89.78. Regular movement of the current PC is beginning to make it more tempremental, and the need for a lap top of some sort even more urgent.
QUESTIONS AND AOB.
Owing to the time, nothing else was discussed. Meeting closed at 10.45pm
The next meeting will be the 27th JAN 2003 at Roche starting at 7.30pm
